Description
The 6530 chip inside the Commodore IEEE-488 disk drives is a mask programmed part – it contains the 1KB ROM for the secondary processor and has factory programmed pin behaviour. This means that it is extremely difficult to find original replacements for. This 6530 replacement board uses a more common 6532, 27 series EPROM and 7402 logic chip to replace the functionality of the original 6530 included in these drives.
It is designed specifically to fit the following drives:
- 2040
- 3040
- 4040
- 8050
- 8250
It may fit inside other disk drives – but you should check before ordering. Feel free to contact us with a photo of the circuit board from your disk drive if you would like to check whether it will fit.

We offer two variants of this 6530 replacement board:
- Just the bare PCB
- The bare PCB, along with the 7402, IC sockets, and the required pull-up resistors and bypass capacitors – you will still need to supply the 6532 and 27 series EPROM. We supply two types of header pins so you can choose which ones will work best in the socket installed in your disk drive.
You will need to supply:
- The 6532
- The 27 series EPROM (and program it with the correct firmware)
These parts can often be sourced from aliexpress. We recommend you test the 6532 is functional before using in this board, to avoid later troubleshooting.
If you purchase just the bare PCB you will also need to supply:
- 7402 DIP
- 3 x pull-up resistors (4K7 ohm)
- 3 bypass capacitors (0.1uF)
- header pins
- IC sockets.
This 6530 replacement does NOT support other platforms that used 6530 ICs – they likely had different mask programmed pin behaviour that this board will not emulate.
